Is it possible to find great craft beers in Hanoi? Yes and yes!

According to Kirin Holdings’ statistical report on beer consumption worldwide since 1975, Vietnam has recently been a regular fixture in the top 10. This ranking has clearly contributed significantly to attracting major players like Heineken, Carlsberg and, Sapporo, who have invested heavily in Vietnam to gain market share.

Luckily for craft beer aficionados like myself, the craft beer industry here has also seen robust growth over the past decade. Dozens of artisanal brewers currently operate in Vietnam, demonstrating the continued potential of this market for craft beer production.

Below I have highlighted 10 great craft beer destinations in Hanoi based on my personal experience, in no particular order.

    1. Standing Bar

Craft beer + tapas bar, often with music events on weekends

Standing Bar Ha Noi bia thủ công
Standing Bar – One of the largest craft beer on tap selection in Hanoi

    About

Conveniently situated in the heart of Trúc Bạch Island, Standing Bar boasts a spacious balcony overlooking the lake. With nearly 20 beers on tap, it offers one of the most extensive craft beer selections in Hanoi.

Unaffiliated with any particular brewery, the owners are free to source new and diverse offerings from across Vietnam. For those craving a bite, Standing Bar also offers a small tapas menu.

    We like

    • Strictly Vinyl – Every Friday, Standing Bar showcases DJs performing old school vinyl sets, delivering a refreshing alternative to the standard “Vinahouse” scene. Week after week, the event continues to attract a loyal following of music lovers.
    • The superb view from the balcony
    • Location relatively close to the center

Address: 170 Trấn Vũ, Trúc Bạch, HN

    2. Pasteur Street Brewing Co. (PSBC)

    Brewery / Restaurant

    Pasteur Street Hà Nội
Pasteur Street Brewing Co. – Hanoi

    About

Pasteur Street is an institution in the Vietnamese Craft beer community. When they opened their first taproom in 2015 on 144 Pasteur Street in Ho Chi Minh City, the craft beer scene was almost non-existent. Since then the beer produced by the brewery has won multiple awards in Asia and in the US. The brand has grown steadily since the opening of their shop. Pasteur Street now has multiple tap rooms, including three in Hanoi.

Strategically situated just behind the iconic St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Pasteur Street’s “Hoan Kiem” outlet features two floors and a balcony. The second Hanoi outlet opened its doors more recently in November 2023, and is located in the Ba Dinh district.

In the past we were not entirely impressed with their food menu, but on our most recent visit, we were happy that they have stepped up this game – there are now many more options, especially those that suit the local taste better.

    We like

    • The very central location of the 1st branch (only 3 mins walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, right behind the cathedral)
    • Improved food options, including affordable lunch sets

Address: 1 Ấu Triệu, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm / 30 Cửa Bắc, Trúc Bạch / 122 Bui Thi Xuan, Hai Ba Trung

    Website: https://pasteurstreet.com/

    3. 7 Bridges Brewing Co.

    Brewery / Restaurant

    7 Bridges Brewing Co.
    7 Bridges Brewing Co.

    About

Launched in April 2017 in Danang, Vietnam’s city of bridges, 7 Bridges Brewing Company has quickly become a household name in the Vietnamese craft beer community.

Since the beginning, 7 Bridges has been brewing its beers which have won multiple awards across Asia. The brewer has now opened two additional taprooms—one in Hanoi and one in Ho Chi Minh City—on top of their initial venue in Danang.

The Hanoi taproom is located in the middle of Xuan Dieu (Tay Ho area) and features a large terrace overlooking West Lake.

The beer menu features 7 Bridges’ productions as well as other selected local craft beers.

    We like

    • The relaxing outdoor space with a nice view on West Lake.
    • The food is decent with a lot of options available. We especially like the large-sized pizzas that can also be ordered by slice.

    Address: 104 Xuân Diệu, HN

    Website: 7bridges.vn

    4. Turtle Lake Brewing Company

    Brewery / Restaurant

    Turtle Lake Brewery
    Turtle Lake Brewing Co.

    About

Turtle Lake Brewing Company is located in a great spot in Tay Ho, right next to West Lake. The venue is spacious with the ability to host events and festivals. However, the main appeal of the brewery is its selection of beers, brewed in-house and primarily available on tap.

Turtle Lake’s core beer offerings are American-style beers like IPAs. But visitors can also enjoy a variety of other homemade brews like stouts, lagers, lemonade and cider.

    We like

Great venue in Tay Ho – Regular events

Address: 105 P. Quảng Khánh, Quảng An, Tây Hồ, Hà Nội

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TurtleLakeBrewingCompany/

    5. Hanoi Cider Co.

     Cidermaker + Restaurant

    Hanoi Cider – Photo FB

    About

Another institution in Hanoi, located in Nghi Tam Place, is Hanoi Cider. Rather than brewing beer, they make their own cider. But do not worry if you are strictly looking for craft beer – Hanoi Cider has a large selection on tap that rotates regularly.

Food is also a specialty of the place, especially chicken in all its forms (burgers, grilled, whole chicken, etc). We also list them in another article about our favorite burgers in Hanoi.

The owners have now opened a second venue named Hummingbird on Tran Quoc Toan. The new place aims to focus more on cocktails but retains all the fundamentals that made their original venue successful, including the beers and chicken dishes.

    We like

    • The food
    • Comfortable space, suitable for both couples and large groups, especially with a children’s play area on the first floor
    • Multiple drink options besides beers compared to the other venues of this article: wine / cocktails / ciders. The Hummingbird has a daily happy hour and regular live music on Fridays (check their FB for the most up-to-date info)

Address: Hanoi Cider – 278 Nghi Tàm, HN / 56B Tran Quoc  & Hummingbird 56B Tran Quoc Toan, Hoan Kiem, HN

    6. Ibiero

    Brewery / Restaurant

Ibiero Hà Nội - Timer City
    Ibiero Times City, Hanoi

    About

Vietnamese craft beer is not only driven by foreign business owners. Founded at the end of 2016 in Hanoi, Iberio has been steadily growing and now has multiples venues – 3 in Hanoi and 3 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Iberio has been brewing not only American style beers such as IPA. They have also successfully brewed East European beers such as lager, with several variations of Pilsner beers.

Their main venue in Hanoi is  located right across from the train station on Le Duan.

    We like

    • A different take on brewing beers in Vietnam.
    • Their venues are suitable for large groups and tailored to local taste.

Địa chỉ:  99 Lê Duẩn, 460 Minh Khai & 48 Lê Văn Lương, HN

    Website: https://ibiero.com/

    7. Bia Sành Điệu

    Craft beer bar + Restaurant

Bia Sành Điệu Hanoi –  Photo FB

    About

Good craft beer bars are not only found in Hoan Kiem or Tay Ho. In two other districts, Cau Giay and Thanh Xuan, an other name is worth mentioning – Bia Sành Điệu.

Both of their branches have fairly extensive beer menus featuring domestic craft beers as well as some Belgian beers. They also have some beers under their own name. Their venues are spacious with many food options available.

    We like:

    • Located outside of Tay Ho / Hoan Kiem area

Address: 30 Lưu Quang Vũ, Trung Hòa- Cầu Giấy & 183 Nguyễn Tuân, Thanh Xuân

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/biasanhdieu

    Website: https://biasanhdieu.com/

    8. The Bottle Shop

Alcohol store + Craft beer bar + food and regular live events

Bottle Shop garden – Tay Ho

    About

If you do not mind drinking your beers in bottles instead of on tap, the Bottle Shop is clearly an unmissable place if you want an overview of the current craft beer scene in Vietnam.

The concept of the Bottle Shop is extremely simple but very efficient – several massive fridges allow you to choose from a massive and regularly renewed selection of craft beers sourced from all around Vietnam.
After making your selection, you can enjoy your beers in the backyard garden, which is also often used to host music events.

A bonus point: the place is now serving excellent Sri Lankan food, making the trip to Bottle Shop worth it for the food alone – clearly a hidden gem in Hanoi.

    We like:

    • The very large selection of beers available
    • The cool outdoor space
    • The Sri Lankan food

Address: 25B/12 Đặng Thai Mai, Quảng An, Tây Hồ, Hà Nội

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thebottleshopvietnam

    Website: https://thebottleshop.vn/

    9. BIA Ả ĐÀO – The Peachy Craft Beer Pub

     Craft beer bar

BIA Ả ĐÀO - The Peachy Craft Beer Pub
BIA Ả ĐÀO – The Peachy Craft Beer Pub

A final recommendation if you’re looking for a beer in a very central location: Peachy Craft Beer, located on the second floor of a building overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake, offers a great selection of local craft beers, both on tap and by the bottle.

When we visited, they even had an in-house IPA and Lager, which didn’t fully convince me, but I’m open to giving them another try.

Additional tip: If you decide to check out Peachy Craft Beer, go on a weekend evening. The road surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake turns into a pedestrian street, completely transforming the view you’ll have from their balcony.

Address: 39 P. Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Hoàn Kiếm, Hanoi
